Grant Writer

Summary of Position

The Grant Writer is responsible for grants and other development work, including fundraising through major donations and corporate sponsorships. This is a part-time position expected to average 20 hours/week, reporting to the Executive Director.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Researching applicable grants and other funding opportunities for YWS

  • Preparing and submitting grant applications

  • Tracking, developing, and submitting all required reporting and other supporting documentation for grants

  • Working with major donors and matching projects with appropriate funding sources

  • Contacting potential corporate sponsors and submitting applications for partnerships

  • Working with Executive Director to prepare newsletters and project updates to keep donors and partners abreast of projects

  • Assuring that all restricted funds are processed and used in compliance with grant requirements and applicable laws & regulations

  • Working with the Administrative Assistant on budgeting and financial reporting

  • Working with the Executive Director on social media and public relations

  • Other duties as needed including assisting with office tasks, snow clearing, fundraisers & other Sanctuary events


  • Required: Experience with grants and budget proposals

  • Required: Outstanding communication skills

  • Required: Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools — especially Word and Excel

  • Required: Ability to juggle multiple simultaneous projects on a tight deadline

  • Preferred: Degree in English, journalism, communications, or similar area

  • Preferred: Prior experience working for 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations

  • Preferred: Knowledge of fundraising information sources

  • Preferred: Experience presenting to groups

Facilities Assistant

Summary of Position

The Facilities Assistant is responsible for general upkeep and maintenance of the buildings, grounds, and habitats of the Yellowstone Wildlife Sanctuary. This position will average 30-35 hours per week.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Keeping all paths clear for staff and guests (heavy snow clearing)

  • Mowing/weeding in the summer

  • Basic maintenance and repair

  • Assisting with food runs, loading/unloading, and similar jobs

  • Cleaning everything from toilets to animal habitats

  • Garbage and recycling

  • Other duties as needed


  • Required: Clean criminal record

  • Required: Ability to work from a checklist without supervision

  • Required: Ability to lift at least 60 pounds and work on your feet all day

  • Required: Experience with basic building/grounds maintenance

  • Preferred: Experience with construction

  • Preferred: Experience operating snowplows, snowblowers, etc.
